Just as the Hindu goddess Laxmi brings in prosperity, putting up signs that say "Good Luck" or "Lucky" seems to do the same — both for the owner and the customer. This term, which was probably brought into India by the British, seems to have taken on an Indian spin, with everything from eggs to furniture using this phrase!
Or perhaps this obsession with "luck" stems from the fact that lakh (pronounced luckh) seems synonymous with luck.
